FAQ's for international travel to Southern Africa - Updated 16 February 2022

We have compiled a list of FAQ’s pertaining to international travel to Southern Africa and the information provided below is only a guideline and is subject to changes.

It is the responsibility of the of the traveller to ensure that they meet all the Covid 19 tests, vaccinations, and visa requirements prior to travel to your various destinations and countries you will be visiting.

Are the borders open to travel to South Africa

Yes, travel is permitted with arrivals via OR Tambo International Airport

Do I require a visa for travel to Southern Africa

1. Australian citizens who have an Australian passport do not require a visa for travel to South Africa

2. Australian citizens who have an Australian passport require a visa for travel to Botswana (Chobe) and Zimbabwe (Vic Falls).The visas (Kaza Uni Visa) can be obtained at the borders of Botswana and Zimbabwe or on arrival at Livingstone or Vic Falls Airports and is recommended that you have USD in cash for the visas. The tour guide / operator will assist you with the purchase of the visas at the borders. 

What documentation must I produce when arriving in Southern Africa?

South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana
Travellers arriving in the country are required to produce a passport older than 6 months to the expiry date and a completed Traveller Health Questionnaire (THQ).  Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test are no longer required for travellers who have been double vaccinated and must produce an approved international vaccination certificate. Updated 14 June 2022.  

Is there any assistance that we will receive for transfers to the testing centers for the RAT and PCR test as required?

20twenty plus has requested all return transfers with our tour operators to the testing centers to ensure you have peace of mind. 

Who pays for the RAT or PCR tests in Southern Africa?

The cost is for the clients own account and includes all transfers if required. It is recommended that you have cash in the currency of your destination. The tour operator will provide the details of the testing centers and some of the hotels are providing the service of tests at the hotel.

2. Botswana and Zimbabwe – USD

Can I use a Rapid Antigen Test to enter South Africa?

No RAT or PCR tests are required for travellers entering South Africa and Botswana who have been double vaccinated and must produce an approved international vaccination certificate. . Please refer to the Government website of all other African countries. 

What screening measures are implemented on arrival in South Africa?

Health Officials will screen all travellers to determine if they are not experiencing any symptoms related to Covid 19. The screening will include having their temperatures taken, analysis of the health questionnaire and testing where required.

Are fully vaccinated travellers permitted to enter South Africa without a PCR test?

All travellers must be double vaccinated and provide proof of an international vaccination certificate. No PCR tests are required to enter South Africa.

What if during the screening process at the port of entry a traveller is found to have been exposed to Covid 19 or experiencing symptoms related to Covid 19?

Further assessments will be done which may include testing

What if I am entering Southern Africa via a seaport?

A negative test result must be taken not older than 72 hours hours on embarkation from the country they have departed from

What is deemed a fully recovered traveller from Covid 19?

A person who was infected with Covid 19 and has completed the isolation period and shows no signs or symptoms of Covid 19

What other health measures do I need to comply with?

Travellers must comply with the health regulations of the governments of your destinations to contain the spread of Covid 19. Travellers are required to wear face masks in all public indoor settings, shopping malls etc. and observe social distancing and practice good hand hygiene by regular washing of the hands and the use of hand sanitizers.
