Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls “Mosi- ao – Tunya” or the “smoke that thunders” is a must-see spectacle so incredible that it takes one’s breath away, just as it did when David Livingstone, the first European to visit the Falls in 1855. Victoria Falls boasts the world’s largest sheet of falling water, with over 165 million gallons flowing over the edge per minute during peak flood season. The falls are located on the Zambia/ Zimbabwe border and can be seen from either country.

The roar and cloud of mist that perpetually form above the falls can be seen from a distance. The splendour of the activities will keep you occupied during your stay.

Culture

It is mostly populated by the Shona people, the majority of whom are Christian. However, the country also has a great diversity of languages, communities, beliefs, and customs.

While some Zimbabweans in rural areas continue to practice and maintain traditional customs and beliefs, they represent a relatively small segment of the population.  Social etiquette and identity are still deeply informed by the traditional social structures and conventions of tribal groups.

Most Zimbabweans maintain deep respect for and connection to their ancestors and heritage, despite urban migration and globalisation.

Climate

March/April – Huge volume of spray making viewing of the Falls from the ground difficult, but great for aerial viewing.

May through to mid-August – The daytime temperatures drop from the 30’s into the mid 20’s. The rains have stopped and generally the skies are cloudless and beautifully blue, making this a very pleasant time of year. Evening and early mornings can be very cool

September is notoriously the best game viewing month as the sparse vegetation make sighting of game much easier. During October it is normally hot and dry weather. November / December the water levels are generally low at the Vic Falls.

Currency

The currency in Zimbabwe is the Zimbabwean Dollar (ZWD) and the USD is widely accepted by tour operators and hotels. It is advisable to have small denomination of the USD for the purchase of smaller items. Most hotels and tour operators accept Visa and Mastercard credit cards.

He landed on the biggest island on the lip of the falls, now called Livingstone Island and from there obtained his first view of the Falls.

Little did he know that 150 years later he could have exactly that opportunity. The best way to appreciate the true splendour of the Victoria Falls is to view them from the air.
